Mike Browning, a founding member of the pioneering death metal bands Morbid Angel and Nocturnus, has died at age 62.

His death was announced by the record label Profound Lore, home of his most recent band Nocturnus AD. “RIP death metal legend/sci-fi death metal godfather Mike Browning of Nocturnus/Nocturnus AD. Journey beyond the gateway to the outer void,” they wrote.

Browning was born May 26, 1964 in Tampa, Florida. He began drumming when he was 13, inspired by Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Angel Witch, Slayer, and Mercyful Fate.

He later met guitarist Trey Azagthoth, and in 1983 they formed Morbid Angel together, feeding into the emerging death metal genre.

They released their debut album ‘Abominations of Desolation’ in 1991, with Browning on lead vocals and drums. It went on to be considered one of the most important death metal albums of all time, though it was initially shelved upon its recording in 1986 as the band were dissatisfied with it. That same year, Browning was fired from the band after a fight with Azagthoth.

Browning also briefly played with Tampa death metal act Incubus before starting Nocturnus in 1987. Nocturnus went on to release two full-length albums during their original run: Their 1990 debut, ‘The Key’, and 1992’s ‘Thresholds’, after the release of which he was fired.

In 2013, Browning reformed the band under a different name, Nocturnus AD, and brought on two new guitarists, a bassist, and a keyboardist. Browning remained active in Nocturnus AD up until his death, releasing ‘Paradox’ in 2019 and ‘Unicursal’ in 2024. He also performed in a handful of projects with singer Lisa Lombardo, including After Death, Devine Essence, and Wolf and Hawk.

Figures across the metal community have paid tribute to Browning online, including Immolation’s Alex Bouks and Michael Amott of Carnage and Arch Enemy. “Mike, you were a musical legend and truly the nicest guy,” wrote Megadeth drummer Dirk Verbeuren. “I can’t believe you’re gone. Thank you for your music and for all the good chats.”

Morbid Angel issued a statement regarding Browning’s passing, writing, “R.I.P Mike, thanks for helping making all this happen. Our condolences to his family & especially his daughter.”
