Before we get into the fresh episodes, we’re opening up the archives to bring out one of Season 6’s most insightful guests: My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James — who just so happens to be releasing a new solo album, Wowed Out, this Friday. In this candid and vulnerable conversation (also available via YouTube), the rocker traces his wellness journey from acknowledging his depression to finding the right mix of treatment for himself. “I always thought that if I could only get the world to love me through my music, then somehow I could love myself,” he says. “But, you know, we all know as we say that, that that doesn’t work. That’s not the way that you find it. But I was so lost in the experience of Jim, I was so lost in this life, that I had forgotten that there’s a deeper soul behind Jim. There’s a deeper thing that is my true essence that is experiencing Jim this lifetime.”

James tells us about the hard work put in to figure out how to treat himself better as “the caretaker for this lifetime.” “I’m starting to give myself this gift of this love that nobody can take away from me. It doesn’t matter how many records we sell or don’t, doesn’t matter this or that, all these external things. I can kind of retain and hold onto my own self-love,” he says. “And it’s not like that’s just a thing that happens and then it’s over either. That’s a constant battle… It’s a difficult journey, but it’s a journey I believe everybody can make.”

And that right there is why revisiting Jim James’ episode highlights exactly what Going There is all about: We’re all on our separate mental health journeys, but we’re all capable of making them. There’s power and hope in hearing each other acknowledge that, and learning from others’ experiences. So listen to this episode above or wherever you get your podcasts, and you can also watch the full conversation at the top of this page or via YouTube.

Jim James will release Wowed Out on August 28th. He’ll support it on a fall acoustic tour (get tickets here), while My Morning Jacket has an eight-show run at San Francisco’s The Fillmore set for October (find those tickets here).
