“We’d love for more studios to embrace new ideas,” said KPop Demon Hunters co-director Maggie Kang and Golden Globes Animated Picture Winner on how they got their unique musical pic off the ground.

“This movie was a little scary to pitch and scary to make, but the success of it (means) audiences want to see original ideas,” said the filmmaker backstage at the Golden Globes.

Kang added, “We’re hoping that this film can open more doors for other filmmakers who have unique stories to tell from a different perspective”

The group when asked about a sequel to the Sony Pictures Animation and most watched Netflix movie of-all-time with more than 325M global views, didn’t unveil any details. They’re basically keeping their heads down and focusing on awards season. Earlier tonight, KPop Demon Hunters also won in the Original Song category for “Golden” from songwriters Joong Gyu Kwak, Yu Han Lee, Hee Dong Nam, Jeong Hoon Seo and Park Hong Jun.

When pressed to describe the lightning in a bottle they’d like to bring forward from the first film into part two, co-director Chris Appelhans said, “A lot of times we made a movie that was filled with everything we wrote; it was a very personal subject matter. I don’t know if you can control much else as a filmmaker; hopefully we’ll do that again.”

KPop Demon Hunters was directed and written by Kang and Appelhans and co-written by Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan. The animated pic follows the global K-pop sensation HUNTR/X — comprising members Rumi, Mira and Zoey — who lead secret double lives as elite demon hunters dedicated to protecting their fans from supernatural threats.
