Yard Act are back to announce their third album, You’re Gonna Need a Little Music, out on July 17th via Republic Records. They’ve also shared the lead single, “Redeemer.”
The post-punk band’s new album follows 2024’s Where’s My Utopia? and was produced by Justin Meldal-Johnson. The quartet notes in a press release that You’re Gonna Need a Little Music is the first album that they made “as a live band in the same room.” The project features a different lyrical focus from vocalist James Smith, using a more “impressionistic” and observational angle: “I think the album is about multiple realities and how individualism has led us, in the modern world, to question if there even is a shared reality anymore because everyone just believes what they want now,” Smith said.
“Redeemer” definitely feels more outwardly dark than some of Yard Act’s prior offerings, with yelped vocals and pounding, primal drumming from Jay Russell. Smith takes on the anxious perspective of someone fed up with the world but unable to escape it. “Redeemer! You stole the sun/ Now your orbit is the bullshit of the damage done,” he barks in the chorus; eventually, his cry of “Redeemer” is reduced to a croak in the final chorus. Stream the new track below.
