One of heavy metal’s most anticipated tours of the year is about to kick off, as Amon Amarth and Dethklok join forces for the “THE AMONKLOK CONQUEST.” In advance of the North American run, Amon Amarth frontman Johan Hegg and Dethklok/Metalocalypse mastermind Brendon Small preview the outing in a conversation for Consequence‘s “Two for the Road” series.

The tour launches April 15th in Phoenix, Arizona, and runs through a May 21st show in Las Vegas, hitting such cities as Minneapolis, Brooklyn, Boston,  Detroit, Denver, and more (pick up tickets via Ticketmaster or StubHub).

Hegg and Small caught up on video Zoom ahead of the run, discussing their first experience hearing and seeing each other’s bands; the heavy metal scene in the early 2000s; what fans can expect on the “AMONKLOK” tour; a couple of real-life “Spinal Tap” moments; and much more.

The two also talked about the therapeutic power of heavy metal, with Small noting, “There’s a sense of control that it gives you in the chaos, in the heaviness, in the brutality… and that also makes sense that it’s somewhat therapeutic in times of crisis.”

Hegg chimed in, “I also think it’s like a pressure valve. If you feel frustrated, angry, whatever, you go to a concert or put on your favorite metal album, and just rock out or thrash out, you release all that anger and anxiety…. Anytime you go to a metal concert, people are in such a good mood”

Small tied that all in to the “AMONKLOK” tour,  noting, “Our show is gonna be so much fun. The theatricality of Amon Amarth, of what [opening act] Castle Rat’s gonna do, and then [Dethklok’s] show is just ridiculous…. My favorite thing is to look out at the audience and see some sense of hypnosis take over.”
