Samara Weaving has revealed she’s a huge fan of Red Dead Redemption, Assassin’s Creed and Mortal Kombat.
Speaking to Polygon for their latest Shelf Quest video, scream queen Weaving explained that she takes her PlayStation 5 with her on every job she does. “It’s insane, ‘cos it takes up half my suitcase. But I bring it to every Airbnb and hotel that I stay at. [Castmembers] are like ‘hey, do you want to come out for dinner? No, I’m playing Assassin’s Creed, sorry.” She’s a huge fan of open-world games because you can “explore and find weird things” but doesn’t love puzzle games. “They just feel like homework to me.”
Elsewhere in the video, Weaving said that her favourite game is Red Dead Redemption after she got into it during COVID. Is there a better game [than Red Dead Redemption]? I don’t think so. My husband [director Jimmy Warden] was playing it and it seemed to bring him joy in a real time of darkness. The story is excellent.”
“Red Dead Redemption 2 is also fantastic,” she continued. “I do have qualms with that little section where you’re building a fence and milking a cow for what seems like forever. I want to rob banks and shoot up the saloon.I’m living a fantasy, can we not be wallowing and milking a cow right now, can we be being a naughty cowboy [instead]. Maybe the makers got a bit lazy that day.”
And while she finds playing online games “weird”, Weaving did boast that she can beat a lot of people at Mortal Kombat. “I don’t know why [but] it speaks to me,” she explained. “Especially Katana, she’s my fav. She’s quick, she throws fans and cuts people’s heads off – what more do you want in a woman? I’m not sure what that says about me. Maybe it’s my British heritage, where we’re all really repressed and need an outlet.”
Last year, Jeffrey Dean Morgan said he wanted to star in a live-action adaptation of Red Dead Redemption though game developers Rockstar Games have never spoken about turning the hit video game into a movie. In 2024, Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser claimed the reason why no Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption adaptation had been made was because the studio wouldn’t have full creative control. “The risk never made sense. The perception [used to be] that games made poor-quality movies.”
