Van Halen‘s 5150 album is being reissued for its 40th anniversary.
Rhino is rolling out three configurations on March 27th including a multi-format box set (LP/3CD/Blu-ray), a 2-LP vinyl release, and a 2-CD digipak. Each features the original album’s audio remastered directly from the original master tapes by the band’s longtime engineer Donn Landee, as well as alternate edits, extended versions, and era-specific live material.
The deluxe box set expands on that with the addition of a CD containing a full, previously unreleased concert: “New Haven Veteran Memorial Coliseum – New Haven, CT (August 27, 1986).” It also contains a Blu-ray disc of video content, such as the Live Without a Net concert film (updated to HD) and promotional music videos.
5150 marked the introduction of Sammy Hagar as Van Halen’s frontman and continued the band’s commercial success in the post David Lee Roth-era, debuting at the top of the Billboard 200 to become the group’s first No. 1 LP. It eventually earned 6x Platinum certification in the US on the strength of the singles “Why Can’t This Be Love,” “Dreams,” and “Best of Both Worlds” — all chart toppers.
