The Evil Empire is back.
After some years of avoiding spending in free agency, the Yankees dropped a Bronx bombshell early Wednesday morning, signing Gerrit Cole to a nine-year, $324 million deal, according to Jon Heyman.
The Yankees needed Cole, price tag aside, and they got a deal done. Their fans are understandably stoked about this, but of course, however many Yankee fans there are, there are many, many more people who are not fans of the Yankees.
While this shift in free-agent philosophy is new in terms of recent history, one thing that’s entirely familiar is folks hating the pinstripes. The Yankees rocked free agency and woke up their detractors, who took to Twitter to throw some ice water on Bombers fans everywhere:
With Gerrit Cole signing with the Yankees, I regret to inform everyone that Jacob deGrom remains the best pitcher in New York baseball.

Woke up this morning smiling at the idea of Gerrit Cole sitting there on May 1 with no hair, no beard, a 4.84 ERA and Yankees fans booing him off the mound.
