What is it that drives you to go to a live music event? Sure, there are many reasons: Getting out of the house, having some fun, seeing your friends (also, making new ones) and then – of course – the bands. Still, it seems there is something else about getting together to jam to a live performance that no one can quite put their finger on. That is, if you’re listening.
When it comes to music, this event – Introducing Garden State – is holding a vision of creating spaces for audience members and artists to truly experience each other. A space where going to a gig means active participation in what’s going down and being an integral part of something greater: An adventure, a movement.
So it comes to pass that the “Jesses” from Garden State are throwing a get together to launch their concept and the vision for future antics on 7 April 2018 at Centre for the Book in Cape Town. On offer is the unique opportunity to be one of three hundred (yes – ONLY 300) to witness an eclectic and unexpected blend of some of SA’s finest acts alongside three prolific USA musicians who are flying south for this shindig.

Garden State isn’t just about the music though. It’s about a state of mind that embraces curiosity, conscious lifestyle and social upliftment.
This gathering is proud to feature a showcase of delicious, all-vegan food treats – giving those in attendance the chance to be playful and try something new regardless of their personal preferences, and in doing so contributing to lightening our collective footprint in a time when it is crucial that we do so. According to National Geographic, a vegan diet consumes roughly 2,200 litres less water than your average diet per day. Moving forward, Garden State will connect ethical growers, bakers, brewers and brownie-makers, putting together an annual culinary offering that is as exciting as it is tasty.
Garden State is also passionate about how we relate to nature – to our home. Back at Garden State HQ (Peace of Eden, Knysna), the Greenpop initiative “Eden Festival Of Action” takes place in July and will see Greenpop planting five thousand trees in fire damaged zones. Attendees at the Garden State launch event in Cape Town will have an opportunity to engage and sign up for this project with Greenpop. In the years to come, the main Garden State festival will see that for every ticket purchased, a water-wise and indigenous tree is planted in the Garden Route.
