Make America Great Again Inc., the super PAC backing former President Donald Trump, has spent a magnitude more on ads targeting 2024 rival Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis than on President Biden — despite Trump leading the GOP field by over 40 points on average.
MAGA Inc. has spent over $23 million funding ads opposing DeSantis and over $6.7 million against Biden, according to data published by Rob Pyers, research director for the California Target Book.
The large discrepancy in spending shows Trump’s camp is engaged in the primary election and is not merely focusing on beating Biden, as the former president’s campaign has tried to convey in his messaging and skipping out on every GOP debate.
“The spending will stop when Ron DeSantis goes back to doing what he was elected to do — govern the state of Florida,” Karoline Leavitt, spokeswoman for MAGA Inc., told The Post.
Trump has called on the Republican National Committee to cancel all debates to focus on defeating the Democrats. He has also said he would not want to engage in debates with “people that shouldn’t even be running for president” while speaking to Tucker Carlson in a counter-program interview during the first GOP debate.
The Florida governor is the primary target of negative advertising out of all the candidates, racking up over $25 million in opposing ads from backers of other White House hopefuls. Biden comes in second place with a total of $20.2 million in attack ads from the 2024 field, according to Pyers’ data.
Never Back Down, the super PAC supporting DeSantis, has not spent any money on Biden attack ads, and has instead focused on Trump and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, the data shows.
“Negative spending against DeSantis is over $30M at this point when you include digital and mail as well,” a person familiar with Never Back Down’s strategy said.
The only ad MAGA Inc. is currently running specifically targets Biden and juxtaposes Trump’s record with that of the current president.
“President Trump made us safer, wealthier and more secure. Under Trump, prices were low and groceries [were] affordable. Trump took on China and won, jobs were coming home, and Trump secured our border. But bumbling Biden has made a mess,” the ad says, in part.
MAGA Inc.’s attack ads on DeSantis have focused on his Congressional record on Social Security, Medicare, taxes, supporting making Puerto Rico a state and his “pudding fingers.”
The 45th president is leading the Republican primary field by a long shot, with RealClearPolitics data showing him at 59% on average, compared to DeSantis’ 14.8%.
Polls show the former commander-in-chief in a much tighter race against Biden, with a Fox News survey released Wednesday indicating Trump would defeat Biden 50% to 46%.
