Today sees the official release of the first single and its music video from THE WATERMARK HIGH’s upcoming EP, set for release in March. The single is entitled ‘Saudade’ and features an interesting mix of chopped samples, a dreamy atmosphere and an interesting structure, which are all things signature to any THE WATERMARK HIGH track.
‘Saudade’ is a Portuguese word that has no direct English translation, and which refers to a deep feeling of nostalgia or longing for an absent someone or something, that one loves; a perfect match for the mood and feel the track conveys.
‘Saudade’ started off as an instrumental track, but after experimenting with the addition of various vocal samples, including the closest he’s gotten to having a traditional ‘vocal hook’ on the EP, THE WATERMARK HIGH ended up with more of a ‘song’ opposed to just an instrumental.
“None of my music is written as deliberate traditional ‘singles’, but I thought this song would work best as a single, because it has a rather distinct vocal melody, which people tend to be more open to. Other than that, I just think it’s a pretty good representation of my sound overall.”
Like his previous music video, the music video for ‘Saudade’ is a collaboration between himself (The Now Museum, a production company he part-owns) and Rick Joaquim at Duck Rabbit Studios. They both conceptualised and combined ideas, whilst Rick shot everything and THE WATERMARK HIGH edited the video.
“We tried to use the visuals to further accentuate the mood of the song, and the meaning of the word ‘Saudade’. There is no narrative or anything like that, we just made a big montage of random things that represent memories, or that to us feels ‘nostalgic’ or illustrates ‘longing’. It was more about creating a mood or a feeling, opposed to telling a story, much like my music in general.”
