Hurricanes head coach Rob Brind’Amour told reporters Wednesday that Michal Jordan’s allegation of physical abuse by Bill Peters “for sure happened.”
Jordan, who played in the Hurricanes organization from 2010-16, wrote in a series of tweets Tuesday that Peters once kicked him in the back during a game and punched another player in the head while coaching in Carolina. Jordan’s allegations followed Akim Aliu’s account made public earlier this week that Peters once used racial slurs toward him during the 2009-10 season, when he coached in the AHL.
Brind’Amour, who has worked for the Hurricanes as a coach since 2011, confirmed the two instances of physical abuse Jordan described on Twitter. He said he felt the Hurricanes handled it “correctly,” but declined to elaborate on how or whether Peters was held accountable.
“The way the players handled it and the support staff handled it [was to] bring it to management right away,” Brind’Amour told reporters. “Management handled it correctly and [we] never heard of it again. Never saw anything else after that. It was definitely dealt with in my opinion correctly. That’s not something we talk about… we’ve definitely moved past that.”
According to The Athletic, the player who was punched in the head still plays for the Hurricanes but wishes to remain anonymous.
“Players are afraid to speak up, and to be honest with you, everybody under the coach, the manager, they are afraid to speak up, I think at times,” Brind’Amour told reporters via The Athletic. “Because there’s a big gap on the power structure on that. I think the players have way more power now, and they realize that. I think it’s important for them to speak out about whatever they think is important because the times have changed. They definitely have more power and they need to speak up.”
Peters resigned from his position as Carolina head coach in April 2018, shortly after the franchise’s ownership changed hands and Tom Dundon took over. He signed a deal to coach the Flames three days later.
The Flames are in the process of investigating Aliu’s claim against Peters.
