Rage Against The Machine‘s Tom Morello has told NME the band’s future is “unknown”.
The guitarist said Rage have no plans to tour but he said their music remains important to recent protests in Brazil and Turkey.
When asked about the LA band’s future he told NME: “It is unchanged. All I can say is that the music we created is so vital and contemporary to what is happening today in São Paolo and Istanbul. Those songs are being played over PA systems and sung in the streets wherever people are standing up for their rights. In that regard, the band is alive and well. Whether or not we play any more shows is… unknown.”
Riots recently broke out in Brazil over the costs to the public of the impending World Cup next year and the Olympics in 2016. Five people also died and thousands were injured in last month’s wave of protests across Turkey – the worst unrest the country had seen in 10 years of rule by Tayyip Erdogan. Protesters have accused him of becoming increasingly authoritarian and trying to impose conservative Islamic values on a secular state.
Morello confirmed late last year that Rage have no plans to make a new studio album. At the time he said: “When bands make albums it’s because everybody wants to, and that’s not the case with Rage Against The Machine at the moment. Everyone in the band gets along very well, we consider each other friends and comrades in arms, but people sometimes don’t feel ready to do it. I don’t have one minute of one day that’s not filled with music, or politics, or family. If at some point Rage were to get it together to work more I would be open to that, but that’s not on the table right now.”
Morello has pushed himself increasingly to the forefront of politics and making solo music under his Nightwatchman guise in recent years, but did reunite with the band in 2010 for a concert at London’s Finsbury Park, following their Christmas Number One victory over The X Factor.
