The Texans notched a statement victory by knocking off the Patriots 28-22 in a balanced “Sunday Night Football” effort.
For the past decade, Houston had been unable to knock off the AFC powerhouse, last defeating Tom Brady and the Patriots in Week 17 of the 2009 season. Led by a strong defensive performance and stellar play by quarterback Deshaun Watson, the Texans finally ended the head-to-head losing skid.
The Patriots tallied the game’s first points on a Kai Forbath field goal on their opening drive, but the Texans were quick to answer. Watson logged a pair of touchdown throws on consecutive drives while the Houston defense frustrated Tom Brady into a flurry of incompletions and pressures. Brady finished the first half just 7-of-19 for 82 yards and an interception.
As the game progressed, Brady settled in and finally energized a Patriots offense that didn’t look the part of the one-loss team that entered the night. New England was unable to provide much drama until Julian Edelman caught a 20-yard touchdown reception with 55 seconds remaining to cut the Texans lead to six, but the Patriots failed to recover the onside kick.
With the win, the Texans stay atop the AFC South while the Ravens overtake the Patriots for the AFC’s No. 1 seed. Sporting News tracked live updates and highlights of Patriots vs. Texans.
