Last night in Bakersfield, California, Paramore performed their beloved 2007 hit “Misery Business” for the first time in four years, after retiring it from their setlist back in 2018.

The Nashville-based trio initially decided to retire their breakout single due to criticisms of sexism for select lyrics from the song, as well as Paramore’s own concern that the song could be seen as reductive in the fight for empowerment and feminism. However, in the years since, its absence from the band’s setlists only contributed to increasing demand for it, thanks to their diehard fans and a series of resurgences on TikTok.

According to Rolling Stone, bandleader Hayley Williams announced the return of “Misery Business” at the band’s concert by saying, “Four years ago, we said we were gonna retire this song for a little while, and I guess technically we did. What we did not know was that just about five minutes after I got canceled for saying the word ‘whore’ in a song, all of TikTok decided that it was ok. Make it make sense.”

Williams and Paramore seemed to welcome engaging with their fans while performing the beloved track and put a new spin on the song’s legacy. “I’m not gonna preach about it. I’m just gonna say thank you for being nostalgic about this because this is one of the coolest moments of our show, and it’s very nice to feel like there’s a reason to bring it back that’s positive,” Williams told the audience.

Paramore are riding an enormous high at the moment having recently released the psych-pop title track “This Is Why” ahead of the release of their sixth studio album out Feb. 10. Additionally, Paramore is set to kick off a string of intimate club shows this fall across the country as well as headlining the When We Were Young Festival this month.
