As the Buffalo Sabres look for trade partners amid a tricky salary cap situation, general manager Jason Botterill may have a player who wants out.

On Thursday, TSN’s Darren Dreger reported that Sabres defenseman Zach Bogosian has requested a trade away from the team.

Bogosian, 29, has been part of the Sabres organization since he was acquired from the Winnipeg Jets in a February 2015 trade. Despite Bogosian’s status as one of the team’s veterans, the Massena, N.Y., native has struggled to stay on the ice for the team (he has never played more than 65 games in one season in Buffalo).

The Sabres have played nine defenseman at the NHL level this season, and Bogosian found himself a healthy scratch even when the team used seven blueliners in Thursday’s 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman mentioned Pittsburgh Penguins forward Alex Galchenyuk ā€” who is reportedly on the trade block ā€” as a potential target for the Sabres, who desire help at forward.

Both Botterill and Buffalo head coach Ralph Krueger declined to comment on Bogosian’s reported trade request after Thursday’s game. The blueliner’s contract carries a $5.14 million cap hit through the end of the 2019-20 season.
