Kerry King Dusts Off Slayer Classics at First Gig with Solo Band: Video + Setlist

Kerry King played his first gig with his eponymous solo band on Tuesday (May 7th) at Chicago metal club Reggies, and the setlist featured numerous Slayer songs as well as cuts from King’s upcoming solo debut, From Hell I Rise.

King’s band is comprised of fellow thrash vets including drummer Paul Bostaph (Slayer), bassist Kyle Sanders (Hellyeah), guitarist Phil Demmel (ex-Machine Head), and Death Angel vocalist Mark Osegueda.

The all-star group opened the show with the live debut of three From Hell I Rise tracks before dipping into the Slayer discography for “Repentless.”

From there, the setlist scattered a handful of other Slayer cuts from various eras (“Hate Worldwide,” “Chemical Warfare,” “Disciple”) among most of the songs from From Hell I Rise. The 17-song set concluded with a crushing back-to-back combo of Slayer staples “Raining Blood” and “Black Magic” that led into the finale of the new title track “From Hell I Rise.”

When King first detailed his solo band, it was under assumption that it would be his primary post-Slayer project, carrying on the legacy of the iconic thrash band. However, just weeks later, it was announced that Slayer were reuniting for fall festival dates.

As of now, it appears King will be handling double-duty with his solo act and a reunited Slayer. His solo band has appearances slated for Thursday (May 9th) at Welcome to Rockville in Daytona Beach, Florida, and on May 16th at the Sonic Temple festival in Columbus, Ohio, and will support Mastodon and Lamb of God on a North American tour shit summer (get tickets here).
