The Edmonton Oilers by no means impressed on Tuesday in a 6-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, and their struggles were summed up on one play in particular in the third period.
Gathering the puck off the draw, Hurricanes defenseman Dougie Hamilton faked a dump-in and fired the puck on-net from center ice. Low and behold, Mikko Koskinen fell for it as he surrendered the goal, making it 6-3 for Carolina.
Hamilton’s goal marked his 11th of the season and essentially put the final nail in the coffin as the score held to the finish.
With the loss, Edmonton has now lost three of its last four, bringing its record to 18-11-4. Still, the Oilers remain in first place in the Pacific Division thanks to the Calgary Flames defeat of the Arizona Coyotes in regulation Tuesday. Both teams currently sit at 40 points in 33 games played.
Meanwhile, the Canes have now won three straight and are 19-11-1, tying them with the Philadelphia Flyers for third in the Metropolitan Division.
