Doug Liman and Tom Cruise Are Still “Talking About” Doing an ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Sequel

Our Show Times

Doug Liman and Tom Cruise haven’t shut down the idea of an Edge of Tomorrow sequel quite yet.

Ten years following the release of the 2014 sci-fi action film, the filmmaker told Empire magazine that he and the actor “keep talking about” doing a follow-up because “we love that world.”

“Tom and I just actually rewatched it about two months ago, because I hadn’t seen it in 10 years,” Liman added. “I was like, ‘Wow, that is a really good movie.’”

The original film, also starring Emily Blunt, follows a soldier (Cruise) who keeps reliving the same day over and over again while fighting aliens. Though Edge of Tomorrow had a sluggish start during its box office debut, it seemingly found longevity with viewers throughout the past decade.

“I haven’t necessarily always had the good fortune of having movies that have huge opening weekends,” the director admitted. “Bourne Identity lost to Scooby-Doo [on] its opening weekend. And Swingers came and went from the theaters. What I’ve come to understand is, I’m making movies for the long term. I’m an ego-driven guy, I’d like to get accolades now. But I also recognize that, if I was given the choice, I’ll choose making films that people 50 years from now are still watching.”

Though an Edge of Tomorrow sequel was reportedly in development at Warner Bros. in 2019 with Matthew Robinson penning a script, a film never came to fruition. However, Blunt has said she’s been “so ready” to return for a sequel.

She previously told host Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that she wishes there could be another film, revealing that she had actually read a script at one point.

“There was one that Doug kind of slithered over to me,” the Oppenheimer actress said. “I mean, I would love to make it a reality, but I just don’t know when or how. And how many Mission Impossibles does he [Cruise] need.”
