Cecelia Castleman Breaks Down Her Self-Titled Debut Album Track by Track: Exclusive

Our recurring feature series Track by Track sees artists guiding readers through each song on their new release. Today, singer-songwriter Cecelia Castleman talks through each song on her self-titled LP.

“When I’m not writing I don’t really feel whole,” Cecelia Castleman tells Consequence. After spending time with her debut album, it’s a statement that’s easy to believe: The album is a confident body of work, one that contains a consistent narrative voice throughout. Cecelia Castleman feels thoroughly and appropriately her own.

A Nashville native, Castleman cut the record at Henson Recording Studios in LA with Don Was, immersing herself not just in a different wavelength of creative energy but a place steeped in an entirely different musical history. “You walk in and feel a wave of energy unlike anything I’ve ever felt before,” she says of the experience. “Being in an environment like that with all of these legendary musicians like Pino Palladino, Abe Laboriel Jr., and Benmont Tench was exciting for me.”

Fans of HAIM and Maggie Rogers will find plenty to love in the album, from the minimalist guitar backdrop of “It’s Alright” to the regret-tinged “You Go Thru Girls Like You Go Thru Cigarettes.” It’s a genre-blending collection, invoking modern notes of country to pair with easygoing pop melodies and fuzzy, rock-adjacent instrumentals in places. While some of the pre-release tracks have been available to listeners for months now, Castleman believes that the album arriving in full is just the start of the path she’s carving.

“This industry is such a whirlwind of ups and downs — it’s every emotion at once sometimes,” she notes. “I get excited when I see people doing what they love and finding their way, because it isn’t easy.”
