Back in 2015, a group of NBA superstars formed what was later dubbed the “Banana Boat Crew.” (There’s even a Wikipedia page about it.) The crew consists of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul.
This foursome got this name because of, well, because of this:
Not pictured is Anthony, but he was with the group on that vacation. During an Instagram Live session with Wade earlier this week, Anthony was asked by Gabrielle Union to tell the story of the time he “didn’t look like [he] was going to make it” on that 2015 trip to the Bahamas.
Although Anthony didn’t specify what year the story took place, it seems safe to assume it was from that particular vacation. As for the story itself, Anthony credits James for saving his life.
“We jumped off the boat in the Bahamas, everybody swam to the little grotto over there, underneath. Then we came out. All of y’all went to the boat. It was my fault though, because I’m still trying to see the last little bit of the barracudas snorkeling and all that. So, it was my fault. Then I look up, and the current is taking me in the middle of the ocean, like opposite from the boat.”
“We couldn’t see you.”
“I know. And it was windy. All types of s— was going on through my head, I’m going to be honest with you. Then I look up at the boat, and I see Bron jump off the boat like he’s MacGyver. … He jumps off the boat into the water. He was bringing me back with one arm. He’s swimming with the other arm. He’s carrying me in one arm.”
“I’ve told people this story before. Listen, I’ve seen LeBron do lots of amazing things on the court. Off the court, when he went and saved Melo’s life.”
“He saved my life. I can’t hold you. He saved my life, he saved my life. Yo Bron, I appreciate that. You saved my life that day.”
It’s impossible to know how that story would have unfolded if James didn’t spring into action. But thankfully he did, and we still have Anthony here today to tell the story.
