Combrink has been crafting his solo career for almost five years and in the period has received two SAMA nominations in 2015 for his debut album Eat It While It’s Hot (“Best Adult Contemporary Album” and “Best Newcomer of The Year”), released a string of radio hits with Don’t Be Sayin’ Goodbye, Change, The Light Of My Day, When You’re Not Around, and his most recent single release, Believe from the RADA Unearthed compilation, showed fans a softer side to Combrink with a power ballad that inspired fans across SA. He’s back at it again and drops an energetic reggae-infused summer track and fans are going mad for Sweet Sunshine after the track received its first radio play on ALGOA FM and OFM yesterday.
Combrink explains what the song is about and working with fellow artist Sevven on the single.“Sweet Sunshine is a song that has everything I enjoy about music in it. It’s a combination of different sounds I have always enjoyed. The song is about loving someone so much that you can’t imagine life without that person so you spend all your time constantly trying to win the person over. There is some tongue and cheek in the lyrical content but I guess I enjoy the quirky side of life so I thought it would put some of that in this feel good tune. I love reggae music and I love pop music, so combining the two seemed challenging at first but with the help of my good friend Sevven, I think we got pretty close. Sevven co-produced this track with me. We finally found the perfect pop sound for the song that was originally written as a reggae tune. We went through a ton of synth sounds and eventually after some time Sevven sat behind the keyboard and it started to make sense. The song was also recorded on a live drum kit, so giving the kit the texture it needed was also a task at hand. It was an interesting journey recording this song. We put a lot of time into finding each element in the song. We build it brick by brick so I absolutely can’t wait for everyone to hear it.“
If anyone understands drum kits, it’s Combrink. Since mastering the drums as a youngster, Combrink kicked his career off as a drummer for many different bands, starting with Mel-Funktion and including Gang of Instrumentals, Chili and Lime, Soil 7t7 and One Day Remains. He was also a member of SAMA-nominated The New Academics and in early 2012 joined multi-platinum selling band, Watershed, whom he still plays for.
Howie Combrink has mastered the art of his song writing and is releasing the best music of his career. Sweet Sunshine is his most energetic and upbeat release fusing a clever mixture of reggae, pop and some electro sounds. It’s pure energy and upliftment in 3 minutes and 23 seconds of music magic. Try to not have the chorus hook “Sweet Sunshine, please show your face again, again and again…” stuck in your head days after hearing the track. It’s impossible. It’s a winner.
