Jaco Snake Venter, is better known as Afrikaans rock group, Fokofpolisiekar’s drummer, but has also made his mark as an accomplished photographer. He’s had a love affair with photography since 2008 and in the past few years he has photographed many bands and artists, and has worked with various film makers and other photographers.
Jaco will be hosting his first ever photographic exhibition at Aces’n’Spades in Cape Town on 6th April 2017, accompanied by a Jack Parow performance. The event and performance is free, so no cover charge.
The collection of photos that will be on display were taken during the filming of Dis Hoe Ons Rol – Jack Parow and Hardus Van Deventer’s reality travel show that aired on kykNET last year. Jaco explored 7 500 km of South Africa’s roads with the crew and was tasked to photograph everything that went on behind the scenes and where the video cameras could not go.
Date: April 6th 2017
Address: 62 Hout Street, Cape Town
Time: 6pm. Jack Parow will perform at 9pm.
*Signed and numbered prints (1/5) will be on sale at the exhibition for R1 800 per print.*
Jaco explains the process:
“I actually wanted to have an exhibition last year on the Friday that Dis Hoe Ons Rol premiered on kykNET, but with everybody’s busy schedules it did not work out. When Aces & Spades contacted me about an exhibition in January I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to exhibit the Dis Hoe Ons Rol trip.
It was not easy selecting the final 20 photographs. I took about 16 000 photos during the course of 3 months’ travelling and there are about 2 500 photos I really like. So it is pretty obvious that I had to sit and think for a very long time about which 20 photographs to select. For this enormous culling task I had to call in the help of my favourite Cape Town photographers to give their opinions. It was insightful and frustrating in equal measures.
I think the end result is a reasonably balanced selection of photos of the TV show’s production, portraits of the characters I met along the way, interesting scenes and of course the show’s main characters. This exhibition would not have been possible without the help of ORMS and FujiFilm. Their trust in this project and experience was very comforting when it was needed the most.
I hope the people like the photos almost as much as we enjoyed the trip.”
